Career Development Center Hosts Fall Career Expo
October 4, 2017
Dedicated to providing Saint Anselm College students with employment and internship opportunities, the Career Development Center (CDC) is hosting a Career Expo on Thursday, Oct. 5, 1 – 4 p.m. in the Carr Center. More than 60 employers, including several alumni, will be available to talk with students, review resumes, and network.
Career Development Center Executive Director Kimberly DelGizzo is enthusiastic about the doors that might be opened for students through events such as this one. DelGizzo emphasizes that whether a student is a first-year or a senior, the Career Expo is an excellent opportunity to practice networking skills and explore future possibilities.
“We encourage all students, regardless of class year, major or career path of interest, to attend […] a wide range of industries will be there to speak with you about internships and fulltime opportunities. They’re excited about meeting you and collecting your resume,” she says.
Industries represented at the expo range from banking and education to entertainment and law. Companies and organizations such as BAE Systems, Fidelity Investments, the Manchester Monarchs, Merrimack Police Department, Palace Theatre, and the YMCA will be available to talk about opportunities they offer current students and graduating seniors. Saint Anselm alumni will be wearing a special ribbon so students and faculty can recognize them.
The expo includes a LinkedIn Photo Booth, where students can have professional head-shots taken. In addition, there will be a Summer Experience Showcase featuring Saint Anselm students discussing their summer internships, trips abroad, and jobs; their likes and dislikes, what they learned, and tips for students thinking of similar experiences.
DelGizzo explains that while the CDC offers resources for polishing resumes, cover letters, and interview skills, they also want to help students figure out who they are, including what their interests and values are and how those guide them towards what they would like to pursue outside of the classroom.
“Our goal is to engage students early on and start having conversations with them about how we can help them to figure out what’s the right fit. Our goal is not to just help you find a job, but find something you love and be compensated successfully for and enjoy what you’re doing,” says DelGizzo.
For the expo, DelGizzo and her team recommend students dress professionally and bring multiple copies of their most updated resume, especially if searching for full-time employment opportunities upon graduation. She also suggests students spend some time researching those companies and employers in which they’re particularly interested.
The CDC has Drop-In Hours for students' convenience to assist with preparation for the Expo, job searches, or upcoming interviews. Students may access HawkCareers to find the list of organizations registered to attend Thursday’s event, as well as a list of tips to consider when attending a career expo.
From mock interview marathons to resume workshops, the CDC has a variety of events for students, with more planned for the spring semester.
