You learn skills of how to carry yourself in conversation with other professionals, and really just get a good sense of what a real job is like. Meet Matthew

    Name: Matthew Gennetti

    Internship: Boston Financial Group

    Major: Mathematics

    Year of graduation: 2013

Why did you decide to do an internship?

I decided to do an internship for two reasons. The first, is because I know that having an internship looks good on your resume. The other is that I am still trying to figure out what kind of career I want to pursue after college, and I felt that it I got an internship for one of the careers I am considering, it would be a very good measure of if I should pursue that career path or not.

If you could tell someone one reason why they should partake in an internship, what would you say?

Real world, professional experience. No matter how intense or laid back your internship is, you are still dealing with other professionals around you. You learn skills of how to carry yourself in conversation with other professionals, and really just get a good sense of what a real job is like. The mere exposure to a company and the communication involved with employees is very beneficial.

What was the most memorable experience you had while interning?

So far, I would say the most memorable experience I've had at my site happened when my supervisor and another employee she works with sat down to put together a letter to send out to clients concerning older life policy terms that should be reassessed to make sure the client is getting the most out of their policy. They had about six sample letter of ideas they had, and they genuinely wanted my opinion on the matter as to which was the best. I ended being the leading voice in selecting the best wording for the letter, which will be mailed out to hundreds of clients. Though it was a smaller matter, I felt like I had made an impact.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to face during your internship?

My supervisor told me to call John Hancock to get information on a few life insurance policies. She asked for specific information about if they were still active, their amounts, and other details. I knew, and still know, very little about the terminology and specifics of these policies, so talking on the phone with reps from John Hancock and trying to explain what I needed was very difficult for me.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in doing an internship but haven't applied yet?

Choose wisely. Do your research on the company, and when you go in to interview for an internship, ask VERY specific questions as to what you will actually being doing in the internship.

Choosing to do an internship is an easy decision. Actually going through the process of finding one and applying for it however takes motivation and incentive. I chose to do an internship because I realized the extreme benefits that would come from it. Endless opportunities arise from participating in an internship along with valuable experience.

Employers look for a student to have some sort of internship experience. Although it is not necessary, it gives you as an individual a big step in front of your competitors.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to face during your internship?

The biggest obstacle I faced throughout my internship was keeping my stress level down when I felt overwhelmed with work or things I could not understand completely. Most importantly I learned that all my co-workers were there to help me if I was ever stuck on a project or had questions and ultimately they guided me through the obstacles I sometimes faced.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in doing an internship but haven't applied yet?

  • Joe Gill

    Meet Joe

    Name: Joe Gill

Internship: Southern New Hampshire University Athletics

    Major: Politics

    Year of Graduation: 2013

Why did you decide to do an internship?

I decided to do an internship because I wanted to further my education in a more hands way. Besides my love for politics, I also thoroughly enjoy athletics so for me to have an opportunity to work in an Athletic Communications office was great. I decided to apply for the SNHU internship because of its proximity to Saint Anselm, their similar size, and my previously established relationship with their Director of Media Relations.

If you could tell someone one reason why they should partake in an internship, what would you say?

Students should absolutely take part in internships for a multitude of reasons, but none bigger than the fact they can further their education. Textbooks can only teach you so much, and usually never talk about the "what-if" situations that you encounter in the workplace. At an internship you learn the good, the bad, and the ugly. This is important because when you make mistakes you will learn how to fix them.

What was the most memorable experience you had while interning?

There were a couple great experiences that I had while interning at SNHU. There are two that stick out, one was good and one was, well not so good. The favorable experience I had was that I got to input statistics for the NCAA men's and women's regional soccer tournament. Teams were coming from across the northeast to play and I was in charge of doing in-game statistics. The negative experience I had came when I inputting statistics for a regular season game. After the game I printed the statistics and brought them down to the opposing coach. Apparently he did not like them because he ripped them up in my face and told them they were garbage and walked away.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to face during your internship?

The biggest obstacle I faced in my internship was the whirlwind effect. What I mean by this is that I joined the previously established SNHU athletics staff in the middle of a season. By now, everyone knew each other and had a good working relationship with each other. On the other hand, I had to come in try to match my personality and work ethic to theirs so we could work together and be productive.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in doing an internship but haven't applied yet?

I do not think I can stress it enough: Do an internship! I was having a conversation with a roommate the other day when I was half kidding/ half serious when I said half of our curriculum should be intern based. The opportunities that you can create for yourself by spending time in the field you enjoy are endless. Go out there and enjoy every minute of it!

Why did you decide to do an internship?

I decided to do an internship to gain experience in the field I want to pursue in the future. I'm not completely sure what I want to do, but I believe internships are the best way to apply real experience to find a focus on what I hope to achieve in the future.

If you could tell someone one reason why they should partake in an internship, what would you say?

It's the only time when you are attending school and can partake in a real life experience to figure out what you want to do with your major. Also, after you graduate internships are not necessarily beneficial because most of them do not include compensation. Internships are not only a great way to get experience, but they are also a great way to network with professionals and employers in the work force.

What was the most memorable experience you had while interning?

The most memorable experience I had interning were the connections and relationships I built with the staff of Career Services. Not only did they help me understand and learn what the office does, but these professionals are here to help and do everything in their power to help the student body with every need.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to face during your internship?

The biggest obstacle I had to face was time management. I had to plan my school work ahead of time, so that I could focus on helping to design, establish, produce and expand the office's social media presence including Twitter and LinkedIn.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in doing an internship but haven't applied yet?

The sooner the better. It is never too late to apply for an internship, but the sooner you get on top of it, the better chance you have at filling the position.

I knew that I wanted to work in some kind of nonprofit organization so I chose to participate in a development internship with the Alzheimer's Association

If you could tell someone one reason why they should partake in an internship, what would you say?

Participating in an internship gives you the chance to not only gain experience, but it also allows you to figure out whether or not you would be happy pursuing a career in that particular field.
