What is a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, often called a Psych NP, is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized graduate education in mental health care. Psych NPs evaluate symptoms, diagnose mental health conditions, develop treatment plans, and prescribe and manage medications when appropriate. Their scope also includes psychotherapy, education, and ongoing support. They consider how physical health, sleep, stress, relationships, and daily habits affect emotional well-being.

A core part of Michael’s work is helping each person understand what they are experiencing, explaining the biology behind their symptoms in approachable terms, and restoring hope. He believes that with the right care and support, people can move forward and feel well again.

Taking a holistic approach, Michael works directly with students to identify what has been most disruptive to their lives and partners with them to develop a plan that reflects their needs and goals. That may include practical lifestyle changes, medication when appropriate, and coordination with counselors and other healthcare providers. Students are active partners in understanding their options and making decisions about their care.
